“How do you think it’ll all change, Belle?” I murmured as I stroked the dappled gray mare’s nose while I leaned against the fence.
She sighed heavily, as if she didn’t fully understand the question. Not that I expected her to.
“I’ll undergo my first shift on my eighteenth birthday. Nathan thinks it might be painful since it’s been suppressed for so long,” I continued as I took comfort in her presence.
My first wolf shift.
The thought both exhilarated and terrified me. The first shift for any werewolf was painful, more-so for us with Alpha blood.
“Thought I’d find you here.”
I smiled as I turned to spy my brother heading my way. At a glance, you wouldn’t be able to tell we were siblings. My brother had my mother’s deep chocolate eyes, but my father’s brown hair. His was unruly and wild, and I assumed that his short beard was kept in check by his mate. While I had my mother’s fiery red curls and my father’s emerald eyes. We did share the same slightly upturned nose though, but that was as far as our similarities went.
“Where’s Janet?” I asked when I didn’t spy his mate anywhere.
“She’s taking Jamie out for a playdate,” Chris stated as he joined me and leaned on the fence as well. He reached out to touch Belle’s muzzle, and she didn’t mind the new attention.
“He’s growing so fast,” I remarked as I thought about my nephew. I felt like he’d only been born yesterday.
“Yep, like a little weed,” Chris scoffed before he turned to give me a small smile. “You worried about your birthday?”
“It’s only a few days away now, and the witch magic will finally lift,” I murmured as I stared out across the field of horses. Belle pawed at the ground before turning and plodding off to re-join the herd.
“It’ll be okay. Even if the shift is painful, it’s only natural. It’ll get easier each time, trust me,” he assured me as he gave my shoulder a soft squeeze.
“Yeah, but all my werewolf senses and stuff will come to life. I’ve been like a strange little freak the past few years compared to the other teens here,” I snorted. They all had their werewolf instincts and desires, and then there was me. I was practically human still, just stronger thanks to my Alpha bloodline. As for the extra senses, primal urges, and ability to shift—most of that was hidden away. For now.
“Yeah, it must be strange. I remember when I first shifted, things got crazy. The horniness was bad. I slept around a lot, as most young wolves do,” he chuckled as I shoved his arm.
“You’re terrible,” I hissed.
“Hey, it’s normal and you know it. You’ll probably be the same when you get first shift and all those primal instincts and shit take over,” he smirked. “When I turned twenty-one, I chose out my mate. Janet and I had been together frequently in all honestly, but we’d chosen each other to settle down with,” he said as he folded his arms, smiling at a pair of geldings that were chasing one another. “But you’ll be okay. You’ll want to shift often, you’ll get random desires to hunt and run, and keener senses. I think you’ll enjoy it.”
Honestly, everything sounded amazing.
“What was your first time like? With a she-wolf?” I asked, gritting my teeth together as his gaze flicked my way.
“Right, you haven’t explored at all. Well, it can hurt for the females, but generally they’re pretty caught up in the moment, all the scents and whatnot overriding their senses. It’s animalistic, primal,” he explained, the edge of his mouth quirking up in a smirk.
I’d always wondered what sex would be like, but I’d not been able to hang much with the other teens once I’d hit puberty. It was just too weird. They were all interested in sex and were shifting and talking about it all. My father, the Alpha of our Pack, was too scared it would diminish the witch magic over me if I played around with the other werewolves in that way. Werewolves didn’t shift until they hit puberty. Another fun thing thrown in amongst all the other teenage drama.
So here I was, still a virgin, although saying I had no idea about sex would be laughable. I was a werewolf, even if I wasn’t capable of being my true self yet, and my Pack were primal all around me. I’d learned a lot about the sexual side of things through the others around my age and the few females who’d been willing to act as friends to me. Whether or not that was out of loyalty to my father or a desire to actually know me was another question entirely.
“Lines up with what I’ve heard,” I murmured as I rested my chin on the fence.
“Relax, Tay. Everything will be fine, trust me,” he assured me as he rested a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“Dad wants me to find a suitable mate in the next five years too, one who is worthy of being an Alpha blood’s mate,” I reminded him. “I don’t want to just be a breeder. No offense to them, but I want to do more with my life.”
