The satisfying crunch of bone on bone was quickly followed by a ripple of pain that pulsed through my fist and coursed up my forearm.
It was worth it to knock that smug smirk off the dickhead’s face.
He stumbled away from the harsh blow, clutching at his bloody nose.
“You’re fucking insane, you bitch!” He snarled, the blood trickling between his fingers as I rubbed my knuckles.
“Don’t pick a fight you can’t win. Basic survival 101,” I stated as Finn hissed from my shoulder.
I reached up to scratch the white kitten’s chin, and the guy just gave me a completely bewildered look.
Had no one taught this dumbass the basics of life?

Now I sat in one of the vice-chancellor’s offices as the area enforcer of the region gazed at me.
His graying hair was combed back, and he looked like a professor who was going to make my life miserable in his slate-gray suit. Except I knew what he was—a warlock. One of the beings that had enlightened my kind already.
The blonde woman beside him looked incredibly flustered as she drummed her fingers on her arm and gazed at me like I was a ticking time bomb.
“How many enlightenment sessions did Rosette have?” the warlock asked, directing his attention to Finn, my aquelis. He was perched on my shoulder like the perfect little guardian he was.
“Two,” Finn responded in his boyish voice.
“Strange, she should’ve undergone three before being sent here. I’ll get this done quickly. Rosette, you ready?” Mr. Brady—as he’d introduced himself—met my gaze with his ocean blue eyes that reminded me of home.
“I guess so,” I shrugged, still not quite understanding what the problem was.
I’d punched that know-it-all mermaid when he’d insulted Finn. You don’t insult my only family and expect to not get put in your place.
Mr. Brady reached out to press his palm to my forehead, and I fought the urge to flinch away as a magical warmth washed over me and flooded my vision with an eerie green hue. I shuddered, my mind opening up as emotions bubbled through me, things I hadn’t felt before. I started to recognize them too as I gritted my teeth. Knowledge filled my mind, things that a deeper part of me somehow knew, and so much more that Mr. Brady was transferring to me in order to adapt to this new way of life.
After what felt like an hour, the green faded away as Mr. Brady stepped back and leaned against the desk.
“How do you feel, Rosette?” he asked as I stared down at my hands, frowning softly.
I didn’t even know how to answer that. I felt like someone had just taught me an entire lifetime’s worth of knowledge, and it was overwhelming.
“How do you feel about what you did to Mr. Watts?” The vice-chancellor asked as she flicked her gaze between Mr. Brady and I. Her messy gray bun was falling out, and those steely gray eyes bored into me like she was hoping to uncover my true feelings with just a look.
“Who?” I arched a brow, and the woman scowled at me.
“The man you assaulted!” she asserted. “Ryan Watts.”
Right, that dickhead had a name. Not that I’d caught it.
